I don’t know about you guys but in life, I have the tendency to roll my eyes a lot. And by a lot I mean on hourly basis, at basically everyone I know, including animals and stationary objects. I rolled my eyes at my friends, my parents, my siblings, my grandparents, strangers, strangers’ friends, computer screen, television as well at the movies. It’s amazing how I didn’t get cross eyed with so much of eye rolling happening on my face.

I wouldn’t consider myself as an eye rolling expert but I believe I can give you guys some guide to rolling your eyes at the right time, at the right subject and in the right situation, especially in Malaysia. Consider these two scenarios as a perfect example as an introduction.

1. RIGHT

Me having a quick chat with some silly colleagues at lunch.
Colleague 1: Did you watch last night’s Akademi Fantasia? I didn’t believe (insert who the fuckwit contestant’s name here) got voted out! She got the power vocals, man!
Colleague 2: Yeah, it’s too bad since she was also (insert who the dumb judge’s name here)’s favorite! I guess (insert who the fuckwit contestant’s name here) lost to (insert the other fuckwit contestant’s name here) due to the incident at the house (or orgy palace or whatever it is them assholes call it).
Me: *Rolls eyes*

2. WRONG

Me having a super cheap lunch with some of my judgmental friends at the neighborhood Pizza Butt.
Me: Excuse me, can you please turn off these Mawi songs? They’re hurting my ears as well as my friends’. Thanks.
Slacking Waiter: Uhm… Uhm… Okay.
Slacking Waiter: *Rolls eyes*

So in conclusion, rolling your eyes actually requires the right subject, the right moment and the right occasion. I will discuss further when is the right time to roll your eyes and when to not roll your eyes so you don’t get into trouble.

Still on the topic of social awkwardness, have you ever met a person that is really, really judgmental just by one glance at you? Yes, personality can shine from within when socializing but what about people who has an “unfriendly” face? Over judgmental people would think that they’re either snobbish, anti-social, don’t want to be seen with or perhaps just plain unbearable. So what if you are just a quite type? Is that a crime? Quite and not so friendly face is a bad, bad combination in society.

I mean, it’s okay if you’re being quite and your face is kinda socially acceptable, people would think that that’s just your personality. Is it wrong if you are born with your face like that? Do you need a plastic surgery to modify your face to become more “people-friendly”? What is a “friendly” face, anyways. It’s not like you closely resembles the Elephant Man or something. Seriously, this has to change! Stop being over judgmental!

Today I want to nag about social skills. So, human being are definitely social creatures but what if some of us who doesn’t really like to socialize? The closest example would be my friend, Susan. She’s definitely not a weirdo or anything but she’s not interested in knowing other people and needs 90% of her time as “alone Susan time”. Not that she’s the type of person who is self obsessed, suicidal or mentally disturbed. Susan just hates to socialize.

I totally understand her. In general, people can be so judgmental and one glance at you and they start to judge in their minds whether you are a nice person or a sucky person to be with. Even I judge at Susan when I first met her a couple years back. And my judgment turned to the latter. Let’s face it, socializing requires a lot of untaught skills. Yeah, it’s that complex. You might think that it will come naturally over time but it doesn’t. You need to think what your words are going to impact the people around you and and how to approach them in a way that compliments your relationships with them.

So, to say that Susan is anti-social is totally wrong. Or not really correct. She’s okay to socialize sometimes, except only with the people she already knew that she is comfortable with She’s even quite nice to strangers. For me, that behavior is totally acceptable in our society but I’m really pissed off at people who said that she’s a party pooper or a pink elephant in any social events like parties and dinners. In case you’re wondering, Susan didn’t have the infamous Asperger syndrome like a certain person on a popular reality show recently. Here’s a definition of the Asperger’s syndrome from Wikipedia:

One of several autism spectrum disorders (ASD) characterized by difficulties in social interaction and by restricted and stereotyped interests and activities. AS is distinguished from the other ASDs in having no general delay in language or cognitive development. Although not mentioned in standard diagnostic criteria, motor clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported.

As for Susan, she’s completely normal from the day she was born. That being said, let’s treat people like Susan as we treat other people we knew, with dignity and with respect. They may have come to us as abrasive and cold, but they just can’t help it. That’s my social awkwardness ramblings for now, tune in for the next post for more crappy delicious stuff.
